Women's Hoops Wins Title at Desert Winter Classic

The MSJC women's basketball team won three games this past weekend and were crowned champions of the Desert Winter Classic hosted by College of the Desert.BritneyThomasforCODtourney-17.jpg

The Lady Eagles started the tournament on Thursday with an 84-28 win over Victor Valley College.  MSJC jumped out to a 24-4 lead after the first quarter and built the lead all the way to 48-12 by halftime on their way to victory.  Britney Thomas led the Lady Eagle offense with 23 points while Delacy Brown added 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Alyssa Walton came off the bench to nearly add a double double as she finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

In Friday's semi-final game another fast start helped MSJC defeat Pasadena City College 91-58.  This time the Lady Eagles jumped ahead 28-12 after the first period and led 50-29 at halftime to seperate themselves from the Lancers.  Thomas had another big game for MSJC as she had 33 points and 13 rebounds.  Brown scored 21 points while pulling down 7 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists.  Kaila Gower added 20 points in the win while Madeline Morrow was strong with 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
Saturday's championship game matched MSJC with Los Angeles Trade Tech for the third time this season and once again the Lady Eagles were able to hold off the Beavers winning the title game 74-52.  MSJC was ahead 24-18 after a back and forth first quarter and then seized the lead in the second out scoring Trade Tech 15-6 in the second period to lead 39-24 at the break.  A strong second half from Thomas blew the game open as she finished the day with 19 points and 19 rebounds.  Brown led MSJC in scoring Saturday with 21 points, she also had 11 rebounds and 5 assists.  Carla Johnson was also solid in the finals with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Thomas earned the tournament MVP honors for her work over the weekend and Brown was named to the All-Tournament team. The Lady Eagles are now 12-1 on the season and will return to action on December 28th when they take part in the Ventura Optimist's Tournament.  They open the tourney on the 28th at 3 pm against Allan Hancock College.
