The MSJC women's basketball team will open their season this weekend when they host the San Jacinto Lion's Club Lady Eagle Tip-Off Tournament Friday through Sunday.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a season in which they went 24-6 and were knocked out of the post season in the 2nd round of the Southern California Regional Tournament. MSJC will be anchored by five returning players from a year ago, three of whom started at different times during the year. Sarina Johnson, a sophomore from Hemet High, is the Lady Eagles top returning scorer. Johnson averaged just shy of 10 points per game her freshman year. Lauren Morrison (Riverside King HS) also returns in the backcourt for MSJC after playing in 16 games during her freshman campaign. Up front the Lady Eagles have three returners who all saw significant action as freshmen. Christina Grant (Perris HS), Genaya Wilkinson (San Jacinto HS), and Suzie Castro-Larsen (Riverside Notre Dame) each played in every game last year with Grant starting 11 games and Wilkinson starting 6. Together the trio average 16 rebounds a game led by Wilkinson's 6.8.
This group of sophomores will be joined by a talented freshmen corps. The freshman class is led by 6'2 stand out Britney Thomas who comes to MSJC after a highly decorated career at San Jacinto High School, where as a senior she was both Mountain Pass League Player of the Year and First Team All CIF. The versatile Thomas will play both in the post and on the wing for the Lady Eagles. Along with Thomas Victoria Sosa from Lakeside High in Elsinore will look to add depth in the front court.
A strong group of freshmen guards will be led by; Crystal Malveaux, also from Lakeside High, Nokomis Cabrera (Twenty-Nine Palms), and Randi Johnson (Elsinore HS).
Malveaux, will be given the responsibility of running the point for MSJC while Cabrera and Johnson will be expected to add outside shooting. Wing Juanita Dodson, from Palmdale High, gives the Lady Eagles some athleticism and can play both inside and out. Sariah Church (Hemet High) and Maydeen Merino (Beaumont) will look to add depth at guard for MSJC.
The Lady Eagles open the tournament Friday night with a 7 pm game against Barstow College. Games on Friday begin at 1pm. Saturday games will be played at 12,2,4, and 6 pm and the tourney will conclude on Sunday with games at 11am, 1pm, and the championship game will be played at 3pm.
