The Lady Eagles (9-6) missed a golden opportunity to gain ground on Palomar College (324), but equally significant increased their lead over Mt. San Antonio College (344) and College Of The Desert (365) with a 335 to remain in second place in the Foothill Conference.
Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang was medalist and one of only two golfers to break 80 over the par 70, 5,536 yard Escondido Country Club track hosted by Palomar College. Yang fired a 73 (38-35) finishing two strokes ahead of her top challenger from last year, Arica Rodriguez of Mt. San Antonio College, and increased her lead in individual play as she seeks to repeat as the Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player. Yang’s round consisted of 1 birdie, 14 pars, 2 bogeys, and 1 double bogey, including 11 pars over her last 11 holes and numerous missed birdie opportunities.
Freshman Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) played a significant role for Mt. San Jacinto College as she recorded an 83 (40-43) to place 8th in the 24 women field. Shoemaker’s round encompassed 2 birdies, 5 pars, 7 bogeys, and 4 double bogeys, including a water penalty stroke.
Freshman Alexis Moss (Beaver HS - Utah) contributed to the low four scores counted for MSJC for the first time in her collegiate career with an 88 (43-45) placing her 12th. Moss continues to grow and develop the mental maturity required in golf as demonstrated by the remainder of her round after taking a 10 on the par 5, 459 yard first hole.
Sophomore Co-Captain Melissa Simpson rounded out the top four Lady Eagles as she rebounded on the back nine with a 91 (49-42) in Foothill Conference #5 on an ideal weather day with sunny skies, temperature in the 70’s, and a refreshing ocean breeze. Simpson’s round encompassed 6 pars, 6 bogeys, 3 double bogeys, and 3 triple bogeys placing her in a tie for 14th.
Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) carded a 93 (46-47). Zulueta’s round included 3 pars, 10 bogeys, 3 double bogeys, 1 triple bogey, and 1 quadruple bogey for an 18th place finish.
Freshman Dominique Lombardi (Beaumont HS) rounded out the scoring for Mt. San Jacinto College with a 120 (62-58) and finished 23rd. Lombardi's round included 3 bogeys, 5 double bogeys, and 4 triple bogeys.
The Lady Eagles will get another shot at Escondido Country Club on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, in Foothill Conference #6, when they tee off in a shot-gun start at 10:00 a.m.
Vivian Shoemaker shot an 83 Monday to finish 8th as an individual and help the Lady Eagle golf team to a second place finish; that improved MSJC to 9-6 in the Foothill Conference.
