The Lady Eagles (14-10), currently in second place in the Foothill Conference, finished the regular season of Conference play in the Mt. San Antonio College Best Ball that included individual play in Foothill Conference #10, on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Team play was not part of the format.
Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang and Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) captured 1st place in the Best Ball format, with a 70, while Yang was medalist with a three over par 75 (37-38) at Vellano Country Club in Chino Hills. Yang’s round included 3 birdies, 9 pars, 4 bogeys, and a double bogey, as she will be entering the Conference Finals averaging less than 72 strokes per round and seeking to repeat as the Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player.
Sophomore Co-Captain Melissa Simpson and Freshman Dominique Lombardi (Beaumont HS) shot 83 in the Best Ball format and Simpson finished tied for 6th with an 85 (44-41) over the 5,423 yard course. Simpson’s round consisted of 8 pars, 7 bogeys, 2 double bogeys, and 1 triple bogey, as she will be entering the Conference Finals averaging under 85 strokes per round and in 10th place in the Conference.
Zulueta carded a 92 to finish in 12th place in sunny, but cool and windy weather conditions with temperatures in the 60’s-70’s throughout the round. She will be entering Conference Finals averaging just over 86 strokes per round and in 12th place in the Conference.
Freshmen Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) and Alexis Moss (Utah – Beaver HS) shot a 100 in the Best Ball format, as Moss had to withdraw after 5 holes due to aggravating an injury from walking the course only to be told on the very next hole that all competitors would be riding carts for the remainder of the Tournament because of the long distance between holes and the steep up-and-down terrain. Shoemaker posted a 101 to finish in 17th place in the 22 women field, as she was required to finish the 17th hole in darkness that precluded depth vision and to finish the 18th hole in total darkness. She will be entering Conference Finals averaging less than 89 strokes per round and in 17th place.
Lombardi shot 113 (59-54), which included 3 pars, 5 bogeys, 3 double bogeys, and 2 triple bogeys, to finish in 18th place. She will be entering Conference Finals averaging just over 106 and in 21st place in the Conference.
Moss will be entering the Conference Finals averaging under 95 strokes per round and in 19th place in the Conference.
MSJC will compete in the Foothill Conference Finals on Sunday (12:00 noon) and Monday (10:00 a.m.), October 30-31, 2011, at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. The top two teams will advance to the CCCAA Southern California Regional the following week. Admission is free.
