Women's Golf Team Opens Inaugural Season

Kathryn New shot a 78 in the opening round on Friday, September 11, 2009, on the South Course of the Indian Canyons Golf Resort, in Palm Springs, at the College Of The Desert Invitational. New played last spring with the Eagles men's golf team before joining the women for their first season. New was consistent with a pair of 39’s that encompassed 2 birdies, 10 pars, 5 bogeys, and a double bogey on a golf course she had never seen before. New is expecting even better play out of herself on Saturday in the second and final round as she was 1 under after her first eight holes and has enhanced her course management for day 2 after learning the nuances of the South Course following day 1. The Lady Eagles Golf Team is looking forward to an outstanding year in the Foothill Conference for New. Meanwhile, MJSC Freshman Katelyn Hardy blazed to an opening nine hole score of 41 in her first intercollegiate match likewise on a golf course she had never seen before. This 41 on the South Course included a birdie and three pars. Unfortunately, after making the turn, the surprises that often jump out at any golfer playing a course for the first time, coupled with the triple digit temperatures in the Desert, took its toll and Hardy shot a 49 for an 18 hole total of 90. Nonetheless, the Lady Eagles Golf Team is excited about the future for Hardy because of her commitment to work on her game that matches her attitude of not being satisfied unless she is playing at her best. The same strong work ethic that saw Hardy pick up a golf club for the first time as a freshman at West Valley High School under Coach Carver and evolve into a top player in her conference by her senior year she has carried over to her play for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles will wrap up play in the opening match of their first season of play at MSJC on Saturday, September 12, 2009, in a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the South Course."
