First Half Lead Slips Away for Soccer Team at Saddleback
The MSJC women's soccer team built a halftime lead in Mission Viejo on Tuesday, but they couldn't hold on as they lost a non-conference match to Saddleback 4-2.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early when the Gauchos were able to score the match's first goal just six minutes into play to grab a quick 1-0 lead. MSJC would fight back to score consecutive goals in the 20th and 29th minute to take a 2-1 lead. The Lady Eagles goals were scored by Stefania Navarrete and Hanna Kanagawa with assists from McKayla Collins and Destiny Blythe. The 2-1 MSJC lead would hold up until halftime.
The second half start was delayed some 20 to 30 minutes by a nearby wild fire and when the action finally resumed Saddleback quickly scored to tie the score at 2-2 in the 46th minute. The Gauchos pushed ahead with a goal in the 53rd minute to make it 3-2 and then added an insurance score in the 70th minute of play to make the score 4-2. Lady Eagle Goal Keeper Riley Ludwig had 4 saves for the match.
The loss drops MSJC to 1-1 on the season. The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host Long Beach City College at 2 pm on the Menifee Campus.
