Soccer Team Advances to Round of Sixteen
The MSJC women's soccer team picked up an opening round win in the CCCAA Southern California Regionals on Thursday as they defeated visiting Bakersfield 2-0 on the Menifee Campus.
The Lady Eagles struck quickly as they scored the first goal of the match just four minutes in when Destiny Blythe found the net on an assist from Vanessa Gutierrez. The teams would both have some opportunities later in the first half, but neither team could take advantage and MSJC led at the half 1-0. The Lady Eagles put some distance between themselves and the Renegades with a second half goal by Morgan Schaaf. Hanna Kanagawa had the assist on Schaaf's goal.
The MSJC defense stayed strong in the second half and recorded their 10th shut out of the year. Goal Keeper Riley Ludwig had 5 saves in the victory for MSJC.
The win improved the Lady Eagles record to 13-6-2 on the season while Bakersfield ended their year at 11-8-2. MSJC advanced into the Regional Round of 16 on Saturday, The Lady Eagles travel to top seeded Cerritos Saturday for a 2pm match. Cerritos comes into Saturday's match as the defending State Champions and have a record of 19-1 they were the South Coast Conference South Division Champions this season.
