Program Purpose

The purpose of the MSJC credit English as a Second Language Program is to serve, equip, and empower students who grew up speaking a language other than English or in addition to English to prepare for educational, vocational, and personal success through specialized instruction, supportive classroom environments, and access to effective resources.   • Complete credit and non-credit certificates that lead to gainful employment
  • Obtain associate degrees and transfer opportunities by completing transfer level English and college level content courses
  • Achieve personal goals

Program Description

The purpose of the credit English as a Second Language Program is to equip and empower students who grew up speaking a language other than English or in addition to English to prepare for educational, vocational, and personal success through specialized instruction, supportive classroom environments, and access to effective resources. The credit English as a Second Language program consists of academically focused courses that develop English writing, reading, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. The English writing sequence of ESL-051W, ESL-062W, and ESL-098W provides a direct pathway to transfer level English.The academic reading sequence of ESL-063R and ESL-064R prepares students for college level content readiness and success.  ESL-056 and ESL-055 are courses that emphasize pronunciation, speaking, and listening skills in order to facilitate student success. The Combined English Skills Assessment Test (CELSA) is used for placement into the credit ESL program.
