Auditions for Mt San Jacinto College, Menifee Valley Campus Production of
This Random World by Steven Dietz
We want to believe that serendipity brings us together, but is that just a myth? Mining the comedy of missed connections, the play THIS RANDOM WORLD asks the serious question of how often we travel parallel paths through the world without noticing. From an ailing woman who plans one final trip, to her daughter planning one great escape and her son falling prey to a prank gone wrong, this funny, intimate, and heartbreaking play explores the lives that may be happening just out of reach of our own. The characters are drawn with empathy and humor, and the cascading series of coincidences neatly illustrates the idea that, as the title suggests, we are all hostages to chance.

The character ages listed below are guidelines. Those who are not literally in the listed age range should be able to believably “play” that age range. If the right talent is found, we will do double casting of roles and add performances:
Scottie Ward: Female, 60+
a woman in her 60’s/70’s, she is private, quite withheld, intelligent, dry-witted, formal, but not a classic matriarch; she is sassy, feisty, enjoys a full, enriched world beyond the knowledge of her children - a secret world traveller.
Tim Ward: Male, 20’s/30’s
his girlfriend has broken up with him, his work is not going well, he is trying to figure things out, at his sister’s suggestion he puts a fake obituary into the paper and then can’t seem to take it back; he is sweet, a bit of a loser, still struggling to find himself, but it’s time he grows up.
Beth Ward: Female, 20’s/30’s
Scottie's daughter, single, generally obsessed with controlling her life, and her death, she is about to travel to Nepal, to go off radar and (maybe) to let go of the control; her defense is her best offense, she is appealing, likeable. Feels like a loud noise.
Scottie's aide, a person of color, she is competent, reserved, Mom’s favorite, according to Rhonda; some call her Bernie.
Bernadette's young sister, a person of color, has become mystical since her mother’s passing, wants to believe in more than just this life, misses her mother, works for a funeral home; believes in ghosts.
Tim’s ex-girlfriend; more recently, Gary’s ex-girlfriend; believes in ghosts.
