Helping students in basic English classes finish faster and succeed

New Approach at MSJC Helps Students in Basic English Finish Faster and Boost Success Rates

Students taking basic English courses at Mt. San Jacinto College are likely to be more successful and complete faster thanks to changes to the assessment and placement polices. The changes took effect starting with summer 2016. The MSJC English Department made changes that will eliminate English 061 and 062. Students who take assessment tests and place below the score to take English 101 will be able to enroll in English 092 or 098, depending on their scores. English 092 will offer additional student support and remediation. Data shows that students are more successful with the implementation of these types of changes.  This will reduce the number of classes students need to complete college-level, transferable English courses.  The accelerated structure is consistent with the Basic Skills Initiative supported by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.
