MSJC Art Gallery to Feature Artwork Made by Disabled Students

In recognition of Disabilities Awareness Month, the Mt. San Jacinto College Art Gallery will display artwork made by students who are affiliated with the college’s DSP&S (Disabled Students Program and Services) program. DSP&S provides assistance and accommodations for those with physical and learning disabilities. This exhibit, aptly titled “Art of Ability,” began when DSPS program coordinators realized that many of the students they worked with were also gifted artists. They devised an art exhibit as a way to showcase their students’ impressive artistic abilities and it has now been an annual exhibit for nine years; this is the fourth year that it has been hosted by the MSJC Art Gallery.
In addition to celebrating the creative accomplishments of this group of individuals, “Art of Ability” is also intended to undermine common stereotypes about disability. Disability tends to be located within the context of limitation and restriction and is often used to define someone by what they can’t do. By dismissing such associations, this exhibit encourages the viewer to look past the label of disability. The highly sophisticated artwork seen in this exhibit leaves no doubt that those with disabilities are not so different from everyone else and in the case of creating art, their abilities actually extend beyond that of the average person.
The exhibit will feature a wide range of contemporary art, in many different media, executed in a variety of styles. The diversity of the exhibit reflects the diversity of the participants. It acknowledges that despite our tendency to label one another, we are all individuals who should be appreciated for our own unique set of talents, abilities, and modes of self-expression.
“Art of Ability” will run from October 3rd through October 20th. The opening reception will be on Tuesday, October 4th from 4-6pm. Refreshments will be served and there will be a multimedia music performance by the band Cloud Obsolete, of which a DSP&S student is a member. The opening reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. The MSJC Art Gallery is located on the San Jacinto campus; gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10am – 4pm.
