MSJC's GIS program receives award

Mt. San Jacinto College’s Geographic Information Systems Program recently received prestigious recognition from the California Geographic Information Association.
The state association awarded the Excellence in Education Award to Dr. Cindy Nance of Mt. San Jacinto College in recognition of its GIS Program during the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association’s CalGIS 2011 Conference on March 31, 2011.
“I was very honored to receive this award on behalf of everyone who participates in making our GIS program the best in the state, including part-time faculty, workshop presenters, curriculum and support staff, and of course our deans and Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Dennis Anderson,” Dr. Nance said.
The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) is nationally responsible for awarding the GIS Professional Certificate (GISP) to persons who meet various rigorous criteria - years of employment in the field, community service, professional development, education and more.  It is similar to the State Licensing Board for Surveyors or licensing for nurses in that it creates a standard for measuring individual achievement, commitment and currency in the field.
The Excellence in Education Award is granted to the educational institution that displays extraordinary approach, contribution, development or commitment to GIS education in California. Nominees are judged on the basis of the breadth of courses offered, accessibility of classes, population served, technical facilities, and post-graduation support. (quoted from CGIA web page).
MSJC's GIS Program joins some of the best universities and colleges in the state in being recognized, former award recipients include:
2010  University of California, San Diego Libraries
2009  California State University, Chico and ESRI (California Community Colleges Geospatial Information Support)
2008 UC Berkeley
2006 San Diego State University
2002 Monterey Peninsula College
2001 Columbia College
2000 American River College
1999 San Francisco State University and University of California Riverside, Extension
Currently, Mt. San Jacinto College’s GIS program is offering “Free! Friday GIS Workshops” on various topics  - online registration at EventBrite: and is proposing offering their Certificate in GIS fully online in the near future.
