Semester in Spain - Study Abroad Workshop September 12

September 5, 2013
Semester in Spain: Spring in Salamanca 2014 Workshop on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in room 106 on the Menifee Valley Campus.
This is Mt. San Jacinto College’s 17th year in helping students study in Salamanca, Spain. Mt. San Jacinto has been with the Southern California Foothills Consortium since 1989, and we sent our first group of study abroad students to London in fall 1990. Mt. San Jacinto sent two students that semester. London is offered in the fall and Salamanca in the spring. They have both been very popular programs.
Students who are interested in financial aid for Spain should complete the FAFSA NOW (fall 2013/spring 2014). Be sure to add Citrus College to your FAFSA or SAR. The college code is 001166. Additional paperwork and instructions relating to financial aid for Spain will be included in the Spain brochure packet. Citrus College receives the Spain budget, so they package all financial aid students who want to participate in the program and are eligible.
For more information on the program, students should contact: Shartelle Fears at 951-639-5261 or Lynn Jamison at 626-914-8560
Salamanca, Spain Program dates are February 13 – April 26. Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in the world, and the city was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2002. We often have students from outside community colleges and universities participate in our programs. We have even had students from out-of-state!
Students who participate in spring 2014 will take advantage of the unique opportunities of studying and living in Spain. Previous Spanish language experience is not required. Students enroll in 12-14 units and select their classes from curriculum designed to enhance their study abroad experience. Most course work is CSU/UC transferable and fulfills general education requirements. Eligibility to participate in the program requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in 12 units of previous college level course work at an accredited college. We send our own faculty to Spain, and we have outstanding student services staff on site to assist you throughout the semester. Classes are scheduled M-TH, so there are lots of opportunities to travel.
Excellent academic and non-academic support for the study abroad program is provided. This support includes classroom facilities, fully furnished apartment accommodations within walking distance to school, insurance, exciting field trips and lots of special social and cultural events. Group airfare is optional.
The apartments are fully equipped so students have all the necessities to cook their own meals, but food is not included. Students in the apartments often buy groceries together and cook meals together, but it is certainly up to each student. Students go to the local markets to purchase their groceries. A walking tour is provided to help assimilate into the everyday life in Salamanca.
Students who stay in the optional homestays receive two meals M-F and breakfast on the weekends. They also receive weekly laundry service. Each student will have a roommate from the program unless they choose to have a single room. Students are asked to provide information about themselves on their application (age, sex, smoke/not smoke, hobbies, interests, habits) so we can select roommates who have many things in common. We ask for the same information for students in apartments.
Students on the group flight are picked up at the airport on arrival and are transported to the airport at program’s end. Participants spend their first night in a Madrid hotel, and we take a tour of Madrid, visiting the famous Prado Museum and Royal Palace the following day.
We also take excursions to Segovia, Avila, El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen, as part of the program, and an optional tour to Portugal is available. An additional night in Madrid is included at the end of the semester.
Photos of our students in Salamanca are listed on our web site and new information on spring 2013 will be posted as soon as we have all information available
