Three MSJC Teams Enter UCR Wind-Turbine Competition

DSC_07171-300x199.jpgOn Friday, May 15, three MSJC teams formally presented wind-turbine designs and prototypes as contestants in UCR’s Wind-Turbine Competition.  A total of six community college teams participated in this year’s event, held at UCR’s Bourns College of Engineering.  Bourns College focused on wind turbine design because it combines many fields of science and engineering, including mechanical, electrical, aerodynamics, material engineering and physics and math, said Jun Wang, the professional development officer in the Bourns College of Engineering who helped coordinate the projects and competition.  An innovative aspect of this program was a mentoring component which paired advance UCR Engineering students with individual teams.
Mt. San Jacinto College was represented by a total of 18 students, composed of two teams from the Menifee Valley campus, and one team from the San Jacinto campus.  All three teams formally presented their design and wind-turbine prototype to an audience that included other STEM students, advance UCR Engineering students and faculty, as well as members of the media.  According to Dwight Duffie, a MSJC STEM Faculty Advisor, MSJC students did a fantastic job.  “All three MSJC teams presented in a professional manner, showing grace, style, and humor from beginning to end.”  Alex Cuatok, Student Success Coordinator stated “Some of these STEM students have worked 6 months on this project.  I am so proud of these students, not only for their accomplishment, but for their dedication and perseverance.”

Ladylyn Dominguez, MSJC STEM Counselor who also attended the event, summarized what many were feeling.  “All six teams came to win, and in my book all six teams came away winners.”
