Clearing Prerequisites

The purpose of prerequisite, co-requisites and recommended preparation is to enhance a student’s chances of success in a desired course.
  • Prerequisites: A prerequisite is a course that must be completed with a grade of “C” or better prior to registration in a specific course.
  • Co-requisites: A co-requisite is a course that are required to be taken the same semester as another course.
  • Recommendations: Courses that are highly recommended (but not required) to be completed prior to registration in a specific course.

Students who believe they have met prerequisites at another institution should submit aRequest for Prerequisite Evaluationat the Counseling Department prior to registration.

Students have the right to challenge college prerequisites.  They also have the responsibility to provide documentation to support their challenge.

A prerequisite/co-requisite challenge requires written documentation and/or, in the case of establishing an equivalency, a written explanation of alternative coursework (background or abilities) which in the student’s opinion adequately prepares the student for the course.

A student can demonstrate that grounds exist for a challenge based upon at least ONE of the following requirements:
  1. The prerequisite or co-requisite has not been established in accordance with the district’s process for establishing prerequisites and  co-requisites.
  2. The prerequisite or co-requisite is in violation of Title 5 policies for prerequisites, co-requisites and advisories.
  3. The prerequisite or co-requisite is either unlawfully discriminatory or is being applied in an unlawful manner.
  4. The student has the knowledge or ability to succeed in the course or program despite not meeting the prerequisite or co-requisite.
  5. The student will be subject to undue delay in attaining the goal of his or her educational plan because the prerequisite or co-requisite course has not been made reasonably available.
A prerequisite/co-requisite challenge form can be obtained on the link below.  Please submit your form and all supporting documents to Enrollment Services.
