Tips for Students

  • Be sure to add MSJC (Title IV Code 001246) in Step 6 of the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA.  California Dream Act Application (CADAA) add MSJC school code: 00124600.
  • Make sure you include your social security number on your MSJC admissions application.
  • Do not wait to enroll before completing the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application.  Apply as early as possible starting October 1st of each year.  The quality of your award will depend in part on the timing of your application.  The deadline for the Cal Grant B Competitive Grant for current enrolled community college students is March 2, and September 2 of each year.
  • Students with special circumstances may need to see a financial aid representative at MSJC before filing the FAFSA.  Contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information.
  • Be ready for the verification process.  After your FAFSA is received by MSJC you may need to submit additional documents.  Check your student email and Eagle Advisor regularly for any documents that may be requested.
  • Add your student ID number to all documents you submit to the Financial Aid Office.  Be sure that all signatures and dates are where they need to be and that the forms are filled out completely.
  • Order your IRS Tax Return Transcripts.  If you are not using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA you will be asked to submit IRS Tax Return Transcripts or an IRS verification of Non-Filing letter.
  • Be aware of your academic progress.  Read the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards and be sure you are meeting them.  If you have questions, contact the Financial Aid Office.
  • Due to FERPA, the information that we can give over the phone is limited.  It is always better to come into the office rather than ask for information over the phone.
  • A valid photo ID is needed to receive specific information about your financial aid.  You must also provide your student ID#.  Social Security numbers cannot be used.
