Carlos Tovares, Dean of Instruction, Academic Programs, grew up in San Antonio Texas. Dr. Tovares joined MSJC in 2012. He provides leadership to the general education and career technical education faculty at the San Jacinto and Banning campuses. He supports and advocates at all administrative levels for 55 full-time faculty and over 150 part-time faculty. Academic Programs offers over 500 sections and serves nearly 2,000 full-time equivalent students (FTES) per semester. Dr. Tovares also supports the campus theater, art gallery, library, learning resource center, and Puente. He manages 29 full-time and part-time classified staff. His committee work includes, the Enrollment Management, Curriculum, Basic Skills, and Institutional Program Review Committees. Prior to coming to MSJC, Dr. Tovares was Interim Dean of Instruction at Moreno Valley College from 2010 to 2012. He was hired in 2005 as a full-time Geography instructor at the then Moreno Valley Campus of Riverside Community College and earned tenure in 2009. Dr. Tovares was Moreno Valley College’s Faculty Development Coordinator for several years and the Faculty Assessment Coordinator prior to becoming interim dean.
Dr. Tovares attended Daytona Beach Community College and transferred to the University of Florida, where he earned a B.A. in Geography. He earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, both in geography, at the University of Washington in Seattle. His wife is an Associate Professor of English at a Southern California community college.
