Virtual Graduation Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Graduates,

Please watch this Special COVID-19 video update in which Dr. John Colson, Vice President of Student Services, shares information about our May 21 graduation and future opportunities.

Can I still apply for graduation?

Not at this time as the extended deadline has passed for Spring 2020. The application to graduate will reopen June 1 for Summer 2020.

What if I haven't heard back about my graduation application?

Graduation application outcomes were either sent to the address on file or to your student email. The My Progress page Program Notes show updated comments regarding your program evaluation, including the verification of completion and/or information about remaining required items. If you have not heard back, please contact Evaluations at ESgrading@msjc.edu.

Is graduation still being held?

Yes, MSJC is hosting the 2020 commencement ceremony honoring all 2020 graduates on May 21, 2020 at 5:00 PM; however, due to various COVID-19 orders (I.e. social distancing, school closure, mass gatherings, etc.), we plan to host our first ever virtual graduation ceremony. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks so please continue to check your student email and the website for updates.

What is a virtual graduation ceremony?

A virtual graduation ceremony is an online platform that celebrates our graduates and includes messages from MSJC Superintendent/President, a graduating peer (student speaker), and a degree presentation. Faculty and staff will be in attendance virtually to celebrate with you and we encourage you to invite family and friends as well!

Am I required to attend the virtual graduation ceremony? Do I have to RSVP?

There is no RSVP needed and participation is optional. We encourage you and your guests to join us and view the virtual ceremony as we want to celebrate your achievements!

What about the Grad Fairs?

The Grad Fairs scheduled for May 4 and May 7 have been cancelled.

Do I still need to buy regalia?

Since we are hosting a virtual graduation, caps and gowns (also called regalia) are no longer needed.

I know it isn't needed for the virtual ceremony, but can I still buy regalia?

Since we are hosting a virtual graduation, our capacity is unlimited. We encourage you to invite family and friends to our website to view your virtual ceremony by visiting msjc.edu/graduation

Will graduate names be announced in alphabetical order?

We are working on creating name recitation videos organized by last name.  The deadline to submit a photo of yourself has passed however those with an approved graduation application will still be honored, regardless of photo submission.

What do I wear to a virtual graduation ceremony?

We encourage all graduates and guests to wear whatever is most comfortable for them, as they may enjoy the virtual ceremony from the comfort of their own homes.

Will I be able to participate in the 2021 graduation ceremony?

We encourage all Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 graduates to engage in their virtual ceremony on May 21, 2020 at msjc.edu/graduation.  However we plan to offer the Class of 2020 a future in person ceremony. All details such as date, time and location are yet to be determined.

When will I receive my diploma?

Diplomas will be mailed to graduates after July 15. Those who graduated in Summer or Fall should have already received their award. If you have questions regarding diplomas or certificates, contact the Evaluators' Office in Enrollment Services at (951) 639-5219 (MVC) or (951) 487-3224 (SJC).
