A Message from the Superintendent/President | April BSSW, APIDA, SWANA events

4/21/2023

Dear MSJC Community,

April is an exciting month at Mt. San Jacinto College. We are celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month, Arab American Heritage Month, and Black Student Success Week (BSSW), which begins next week. I encourage each of you to participate in the many events offered at MSJC.

The APIDA activities are planned for Saturday, April 22 at the San Jacinto Campus showcasing the culture through art, music and dance. On Friday, April 28 at the Temecula Valley Campus, join us for Middle Eastern cuisine and a look at women’s rights in Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) regions.

BSSW kicks off Monday, April 24 at the San Jacinto Campus with a House Party.  MSJC will offer a variety of events, including campus activities, expert panels, statewide webinars and networking sessions. BSSW is an initiative through the California Chancellor’s Office. This year’s theme is Vision to Action: Building Systems and Structures for Black Student Success. In addition to the events hosted by MSJC, I invite you to check out the Chancellor’s Office full list of events. At MSJC, the success of our Black and African American students is a priority. Starting in 2019, MSJC became a leader in the state with its Equity Pledge, and soon after a Call to Action that demonstrates our commitment to develop and implement strategies and practices that support Black and African American students and stand against systemic racism. Review the Call to Action on the home page of our website to learn more about our efforts.

Our plans to create a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and our strategies to dismantle systemic racism reach from the classroom to our hiring practices and policies. We know it is important to bring visibility to APIDA, SWANA, and BSSW to learn about the rich cultural heritage and ensure the success of our diverse student population.

Please get involved in the enriching activities this month. These events are designed to inspire, educate, create understanding, and build friendships.

I hope to see you at one or more of these events.

Take care, Eagles.

Roger
