Mt. San Jacinto College’s (MSJC) Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter co-hosted the Nevada/California Spring Regional Convention with its sister PTK chapter from Mt. San Antonio College held March 22-23, in Ontario, CA.
MSJC’s PTK chapter received the following awards during the convention:

- Regional Community Service Project Award for "The Longest Night"
- PTK Continued Excellence for Advisors, Dr. Nick Reeves
- 3rd Most Distinguished Paragon New Advisor Award, Professor Cristina Acevedo

MSJC Superintendent/President Dr. Roger Schultz, in partnership with Mt. San Antonio College President/CEO Dr. Martha Garcia, offered the "Marvelous" opening remarks at the conference, in keeping with the Marvel theme of the convention. "Persistence, perseverance, representation, teamwork, resilience, growth and healing...are just a few of the many themes we are taught through the stories of Marvel Superheroes...as you continue your educational and professional journeys, remember to take pride in the impact of your work and influence and allow that pride to empower you to share your own superhero stories with others," said Schultz.
Dr. Schultz was presented with the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during the convention. The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction is PTK's most prestigious award for community college presidents and is named in honor of the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, PTK's longest-serving Board of Director’s Chair, and a founder and longtime president of Highline Community College in Washington.
Educational forums at the convention focused on storytelling, leadership, research, teamwork, fundraising and fellowship.
MSJC Classified Senate President, Rony Armas - who works as a graphic designer, videographer, and photographer - gave an inspirational keynote on the power of storytelling using visual and graphic arts to capture an array of amazing moments. His presentation highlighted stories of beauty, memories, historical moments, cultural gaps, and elegant suffering.
Students, advisors, and alumni shared that they felt empowered and excited to take new knowledge and ideas back to their local PTK chapters and college communities.
PTK is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders.
