MSJC receives Higher Education Emergency Relief funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

On April 15, 2020, the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Pursuant to this agreement, Mt. San Jacinto Community College has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

On April 27, 2020, Mt. San Jacinto College's Financial Aid Office sent email communications to all enrolled students alerting them that the college was working on the application process, and advising students of the Department of Education guidelines to disburse the CARES Emergency Funding to Title IV (Pell) eligible students. The email also reminded students to ensure that their Bank Mobile accounts were set up to receive the funds should they be eligible.

On April 29, 2020, Mt. San Jacinto Community College announced the availability of the online application to provide students with emergency funding. Announcements with a link to the application website were sent by the Public Information and Marketing Office to all students through their student email account. Mt. San Jacinto Community College also created a CARES Emergency Funding webpage and informational video providing students with information on the application process. Students were encouraged to apply the same day, as funding is disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mt. San Jacinto Community College determines which students are eligible for Emergency Financial Aid Grants by reviewing whether the student:

  • is a U.S. Citizen or Eligible Noncitizen;
  • has a valid Social Security Number;
  • is registered with Selective Services;
  • has a High School Diploma or GED;
  • has met eligibility for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
  • is enrolled in the Spring 2020 Semester; and
  • has satisfactory academic progress

Based on this criteria, an estimated 7000 students at Mt. San Jacinto Community College are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

On May 8, 2020, Mt. San Jacinto Community College District received a total of $4,865,555 from the U.S. Department of Education pursuant to Mt. San Jacinto Community College’s Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

As of May 15, 2020, Mt. San Jacinto Community College has distributed $3,404,920 to 1,512 students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

When funds are awarded, Mt.
