Internship Opportunity

Mt. San Jacinto College’s Public Information and Marketing Office (PIMO) internships offer the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of marketing, social media management, digital content creation, storytelling and brand promotion.  

Interns will work directly with the office of Public Information and Marketing. The right candidate will demonstrate a genuine desire to work hard (and smart), and a desire to be a team player.

Internship Opportunity Overview: Love to communicate, be organized, and to be part of a greater mission while also having the flexibility of working remotely for a greater portion of the assignment.   

Key Responsibilities: 

These responsibilities are to outline the general opportunities that exist for the intern. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties and expectations - the specific tasks and responsibilities may vary based on the needs of the intern's skills and course of study. 

Social Media Management: 

  • Create, curate, and schedule engaging content for the College’s main social media channels, including, but not limited to: Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. 
  • Effectively share news and information about the College in a way that encourages the community to watch, click or read. 
  • Conduct competitive analyses of peer institutions and how they are interacting with their social media following. 
  • Support various events and activities with pre-planned posts and live coverage on social channels. 
  • Identify trends and opportunities to increase social media engagement and reach. 
  • Participate in brainstorming and planning sessions to create a posting schedule and plan. 

Content Creation: 

  • Photograph college events, people, programs and topics for promotional use. 
  • Engage and interact with photography subjects and provide direction. 
  • Process and utilize post-production software programs and select the best work. 
  • Ensure that all pictures are appropriate, processed, catalogued and ready in time to meet deadlines. 
  • Assist in producing visual and written content, such as videos, graphics, and social media blurbs that resonate with intended audiences and meet brand guidelines. 
  • Film, interview, edit and produce up to five (5) short form videos per semester 
  • Make technical decisions regarding elements such as appropriate lighting, shooting angle and recording of audio to develop and deploy compelling videos, assuring the highest quality video by delivering consistency in exposure, focus, audio levels and composition. 
  •  Interns work 10-15 hours a week, not exceeding 20 hours 

Desired Skills: Self-motivated, enthusiastic and enjoy interacting with people; professional integrity and good judgment; knowledge of what your peers share on social media, your personal or professional social media posts regularly get shares, retweets and likes. Prior experience with journalistic writing, graphic design, video production, or social media brand use for a brand is preferred. 

Qualifications: 

  1. Currently enrolled in an MSJC program in creative media, communications, business administration, or a related field.
  2. Have completed at least one semester of college or have Career Technical Education (CTE) experience from high school and be in good academic standing.
  3. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  4. Basic knowledge of graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus, but not necessary.
  5. Equipment: Working knowledge and experience working with DSLR, mirrorless and other camera equipment.
  6. Strong written communications skills; must be able to write professional, concise and effective copy.
  7. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about MSJC’s mission, programs, departments and services.
  8. Must be able to represent the college professionally, including appropriate work attire, correct spelling and grammar, good judgment and accurate information.
  9. Proficiency in using social media platforms and a basic understanding of social media management tools. Must have a personal account on at least two of the following platforms: X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. 

Applicants will be asked to share their portfolio (in a print or digital format) for the interview. 

Duration: Internships will last one semester with options to renew it based on satisfactory performance.

This is an unpaid internship, but the benefits and takeaways will contribute significantly to the intern's overall growth and career development:  

Letters of recommendation and scholarships will be available to the interns upon satisfactory assignment completion.
